Despite all is the buzz around how Tesla and other electronic vehicle makers, there’s been a stronger shift in the last few years that not many people are talking about: traditional sedans are dying and are giving their place to SUVs and light trucks.
Here are some chart from Bloomberg that illustrate this point visually:
As it can be seen in the chart, sedan segment has fallen from a rather equal share to that of SUVs to around 20% market share in just 5 years.
One can see a very similar pattern in the share of vehicles sold by major auto makers: here are two by Ford and GM.
Cars made up only 8% of GM’s sales by retail value in 2020, including 43,000 of models set to be discontinued and Ford announced in 2018 that it would phase out most of its sedans by 2020, including the Fiesta and Fusion.
So it looks like, at least so far, we’ve been witnessing a “SUV revolution”.
